MSA Program Description

LECOM Bradenton’s Medical Science Academy (MSA) will offer high school students (11th & 12th grade & recent graduates) a two-week summer program in which they will experience an academic medical school environment by participating in small group instructions, hands-on laboratory experiments, and clinical shadowing experience. Forty-four Medical Science Academy (MSA) students will be active participants in a Problem Based Leaning (PBL) modality in which groups of students (7-8) and a medical student facilitator will utilize a case presentation format to explore selected medical concepts and the medical science data that supports those concepts. The laboratory experiences are designed to expose the MSA students to hands-on practical clinical skills such as vital sign measurements. At the graduation program, the MSA students will participate in a group presentation of the clinical case. Support materials for the case presentation will be gained through the anatomy/physiology lectures, PBL case discussions and the use of the students’ copy of an anatomy/physiology textbook. Throughout the first week, information will be presented on health career opportunities in primary care medicine and how students can prepare for their careers academically. During the second week, the MSA students will be exposed to a variety of health care professions at a variety of experiential sites. The overall academy program is consistent with activities designed in the training of primary care practitioners.
